SMP update is under way.

The natural resources staff of Kitsap County is involved in a planning effort that will result in an updated shoreline master program (SMP) by December 31, 2012. One of the first steps is the release of new report called the “East Kitsap County Nearshore Habitat Assessment and Restoration Prioritization Framework.”

The report analyzes how much of East Kitsap’s shoreline has been developed, and it lays out a framework for prioritizing restoration projects. Restoration is not required by state law, but the county must examine potential restoration strategies in updating the SMP.

You can find the East Kitsap nearshore assessment on the county’s website. A similar report is in the works for the Hood Canal side of Kitsap County.
