PORT ORCHARD — Kitsap County is on track to complete its update of urban growth area boundaries by Aug. 31, the deadline set by the state’s Growth Management Hearings Board.

The revision was triggered by a multiparty lawsuit filed against the county over urban densities that the hearings board concurred were too low. A final public hearing on new zoning maps for eight areas of the county — and related documents — is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the county administration building.

Under the county’s 2006 comprehensive plan, the document challenged in the lawsuit, the minimum density for urban areas was four units per acre. The revision sets the new minimum at five per acre to address guidelines of the state’s Growth Management Act aimed at curtailing urban sprawl.
