Bremerton SMP Update

Two opportunities remain to testify before the City Council on the Bremerton Shoreline Master Program. The meetings will be held at the Norm Dicks Building in the Council Chamber at 5:30.

  • Sept 19 Discuss potential revisions to the Draft SMP
  • Oct 3 City Council Public hearing and vote

Issues: Bremerton declares existing legally built houses Non Conforming and places significant restrictions on redevelopment. The SMP treats lawns the same as concrete and mandates large Buffers of fully populated native vegetation as part of the permitting process. Please attend the meetings and tell the Council what you think.

  1. Does this SMP affect waterfront homes in the county or only city of Bremerton?

    • Great question. Kitsap County will have a Shoreline Master Program (aka SMP) for the unincorporated parts of the County. Each city must have its own SMP.

      • When do we hear about the county’s plan? Maybe we should get our projects done before they try to tell how how we can use our property. Should we ask them to pay some of our expense property taxes, if they want to tell us what we can and cannot do?

      • The Kitsap Alliance has a lot of articles about the Kitsap County SMP process and the science and policy issues involved with any of the SMP updates. You can start by clicking the link and take a look around. As far as we know, there isn’t a single County Commissioner who cares whether their new regulations reduce or destroy your property value. Attend our candidate forum this week to ask them and their opponents personally.
